Is Smoked Salmon Healthy?

Smoked salmon is pretty nutritious. It’s high in protein, yet low in calories.

So, it makes the perfect food if you’re on a diet. It is also an excellent source of omega-3s which you need for your heart and your brain.

It’s also an excellent source of vitamin D, which you need for healthy bones. And it is rich in selenium, a powerful antioxidant.

However, smoked salmon has some drawbacks. A 3-ounce serving can contain as much as 70% of your daily sodium limit.

Having too much sodium in your diet isn’t good for your health. So, you want to make sure that when you buy it, you choose one that is lower in sodium.

But if you do buy one that is higher in sodium, eat a smaller portion.

Also, depending on the smoking method used to make your smoked salmon, you may increase your risk of getting Listeriosis. Listeriosis is a food-related illness that occurs due to the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes.

This bacteria can’t survive high heat, which is the heat used to make hot-smoked salmon or fully cooked smoked salmon.

However, Listeria grows at the temperature range of 34 to 113 degrees Fahrenheit. This is the heat at which cold-smoked salmon is made.

So, when choosing smoked salmon, choose one that is hot-smoked when possible.

Why Should You Make These Smoked Salmon Appetizers?

Besides being nutritious, these Smoked Salmon Appetizers are so elegant; your guests will be so impressed!

They’ll think that you were slaving over them. Yet, they’re so simple to make.

They don’t require any cooking, and they take minutes to assemble. Also, you don’t need a long list of ingredients.

In fact, you only need 4 ingredients. These are:

  • Smoked Salmon: This gives a salty, smoky flavor that your guests will drool over.
  • Onion: This adds savory notes. If you like it sweet, you can use red onion instead. And if you don’t like onions, you can simply leave them out, or use milder onions like green onions.
  • Lemon: This prevents the avocado from becoming discolored.
  • Avocado: The creaminess of the avocado helps balance out the saltiness of the salmon.

Making these Smoked Salmon Appetizers is a breeze. Just slice your smoked salmon into smaller strips.

Next, split and mash your avocado. To make splitting your avocado a breeze, you can just use this non-slip avocado slicer since it protects your hands.

Once you’re done mashing your avocado, add a bit of lemon juice. Then slice your onion, and layer the mashed avocado and onion slices on your salmon strips.

Finally, roll up the salmon strips and secure them with toothpicks. Serve on a serving platter for that extra bit of glamour.

And if you’re looking for a serving platter that’s pretty yet dishwasher safe, I recommend this classic serving platter here.
