One of the things that I love about this recipe is its versatility. You can easily modify it based on your dietary needs and preferences.

For example, you can always substitute the sausage for a leaner option like turkey or chicken sausages (or minced meat) to reduce the fat content of the meal. You can also include more vegetables like zucchini, bell peppers, or kale for more flavor and nutrients.

Don’t be afraid to change the flavor or play around with seasonings. If you love spicy food, adding a pinch of red pepper flakes will give this recipe a nice kick.

Ingredients and Substitutes

Italian sausages, sliced (10) – This is going to be the heart of the dish. You can choose between mild or spicy, depending on what you like. If you want a healthier option, you can always substitute for chicken or turkey sausages.

Water (½ cup)

Marinara sauce, use low carb (24 oz) – If you are following a low-carb diet, choose a marinara sauce that’s low in carbs and sugars. You can also use homemade tomato sauce or store-bought tomato basil sauce.

Mozzarella cheese, shredded (1 ½ cup) – This provides a nice creamy texture to the meal. If you are feeling like switching things up, you can use a blend of provolone or fontina cheese.

Parmesan cheese, grated (¼ cup) – If you don’t have any available, you can use Grana Padano or Pecorino Romano.

Italian seasoning (1 tsp) – Make sure you don’t skip this ingredient since it adds a punch of flavor.

Garlic powder (1/2 tsp) – You can also use fresh garlic for a stronger taste or use garlic flakes.

Onion powder (1/2 tsp) – If you want a fresher option, you can use sautéed onions or onion flakes.

Dried basil (½ tsp) – Oregano or thyme are also a good option.

Black pepper, to taste

For serving:

Parsley, chopped – You could potentially use cilantro too.

How to Make Cheesy Baked Italian Sausage

Step 1. Preheat your oven to 375F. Grab a large oven-safe skillet and place it over medium-high heat. Add in the sliced sausages.

Step 2. Cook the sausage until they are brown. It should roughly take 5-7 minutes. Make sure you brown them up before following with the next step.

Step 3. Lower the heat and add the water. Cover the skillet with a lid and let it simmer for 8 minutes. You might want to give it a little mix just to scrape off any burnt bits.

Step 4. Remove the skillets from the heat and add in the marinara sauce.

Step 5. Grab the mozzarella and Parmesan cheese and sprinkle it on top. Cover with all of the seasonings: Italian, garlic powder, onion powder, dried basil, black pepper, and salt.

Step 6. Place in the oven and bake for 15-18 minutes. Then, place on broil for 2 minutes for the cheese to bubble and brown. Before serving, garnish with chopped parsley.

Storage and Leftovers

If you’ve got any leftovers, the way you keep them is going to ensure they stay fresh and tasty. Before you place it in the fridge, allow it to cool down.

Once it’s cool, transfer it to an airtight container. Here, you can keep it in the fridge for 3-4 days.

If you want to keep it for longer, you can freeze it in individual portions (that way, you eliminate waste). You can then reheat in the oven or microwave.
