Ingredients and Substitutes

Step 1. Preheat your oven to 400°F and prepare a large baking sheet by lining it with parchment paper. Grab a large bowl and add the all-purpose flour, salt, baking powder, soda, and cane sugar.

  • Now, grate the very cold butter (ideally out of a freezer) and start kneading the dough to spread the butter around. It should eventually form a ball of dough.
  • Flour the surface of the counter and place the ball of dough on it. With a rolling pin, roll it into a 7-inch circle.
  • Cut the dough into 8 triangles and place them on the baking sheet.
  • In a small bowl, whisk together egg and water. With a brush, cover each scone with the mixture and bake in the oven for 18-20 minutes until lightly golden.
  • Let the scones cool down on the baking sheet.
  • Optional: while you mix together orange juice with powdered sugar to form glazing. Cover the scones with it.
